AN ANTWERP MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY First half 17th Century Woven in wools and silks, depicting a soldier in Roman armour holding a sword over a figure being held down by a further soldier, behind them a fourth figure holding a staff and navigating the boat in which the scene takes place, set in a seascape with two large ships in the background, in the distance with a shore and a large town before a mountain, to the right with wooded landscape, within a border with fruits and to the sides with two bacchic youths and goats, the top with a medallion of a peacock flanked by two parrots, the base with a medallion of an eagle flanked by two squirrels, within a blue outer slip with unidentified weaver's mark to the lower right-hand corner, reweaving and patching 125½ in. x 187 in. (344 cm. x 475 cm.)
