ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 330-320 B.C.
AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 330-320 B.C. The body of the obverse in two registers, the upper with an assembly of the gods, Artemis to the left wearing a chiton and boots, holding a wreath and a fillet, Athena seated to the right wearing a peplos and aegis, holding a crested Corinthian helmet in her right hand, a spear in her left, leaning on her shield, Apollo seated to her right, nude but for a himation wrapped around his legs, a swan on his lap, his kithara below, holding a laurel branch, and Aphrodite seated to the right, attended by Eros, the goddess wearing a chiton, holding a fan in her right hand, a branch in her left, a hydria below, the lower register with a four-figure Amazonomachy, a Greek warrior to the left fighting a mounted Amazon, the Greek nude but for a chlamys, armed with greaves, a crested pilos helmet, a shield and a spear, the Amazon wearing a chiton exposing her breasts, an animal skin tied around her neck, and a Phrygian cap, wielding a sagaris in her raised right hand, her pelta shield below, and to the right an Amazon fighting a Greek, the Amazon wearing a Phrygian cap and belted chiton over long sleeves and trousers, a chlamys over her left arm, holding a pelta shield, a spear in her raised right hand, the Greek nude but for a chlamys, armed with greaves, a crested helmet, a circular shield and a short sword; the neck with a female head in three-quarter view amidst florals, a band of rosettes and a thin zigzag above; the body of the reverse with a flowering plant in a naiskos surrounded by four draped female offering bearers; the neck with palmettes, a band of laurel and a band of dots above; a band of meander with dotted squares encircling below, tongues and ovolo on the shoulders, ovolo on the rim, with laurel encircling below, palmette complexes below the handles, the volutes with molded female heads, white on the obverse, reserved on the reverse, the shoulders with duck heads framing the handles, details in added white, red, and yellow, the foot separately-made 36¼ in. (92 cm.) high
