An early Victorian gold and garnet brooch of Algerian knot form, the entwined and bloomed gold knot mounted at intervals with oblong garnet collets, the short mesh chains suspending an oval locket en-suite, with glazed compartment at the back circa 1845, in a fitted case. According to Hinks Op. Cit.P.44 & Pl.22 (A) "The appropriation of Algeria by France in 1841 unleashed a spate of North African designs on fashionable Europe and elaborate knots and tassles of Arab costume were simulated in gold or gilt metal and worn as brooches or bracelet centres."
