An ETCRRM-II on-line mixing cipher machine, Norwegian, 1950's, No. 39854 made by Standard Telefon og Kabelfabrik, Oslo, the grey painted metal casing with controls and switches mounted at the front and side aperture for paper spool holder, 19in x 9in x 14¾in (48.5cm x 23cm x 37.5cm) Fußnoten ETCRRM is an acronym for Electronic Teleprinter Cryptographic Regenerative Repeater Mixer and was developed in Oslo by STK as a replacement to the ageing British 5-UCO and US SIGTOT. The cipher machine was approved by NATO for traffic at all levels of classification in April 1957 and played an important role in the Cold War period. Following the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 it was decided to establish a permanent direct teleprinter link between the Kremlin in Moscow and the White House. This became operational in 1963 and four ETCRRM machines were used on a regular basis and the hotline was used in 1967 during the six day Egypt-Israel war.
