AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE LATE 19TH CENTURY MINERAL SPAR SHADOW BOX, PROBABLY CUMBRIAN, CIRCA 1890 in a silvered wood and glazed display case of arched form, on a rectangular plinth, 50cm high x 41cm wide These were typically made by Tin Miners in the North of England during the Victorian period, using found crystals & minerals. Entered into competitions, prizes would be awarded for the best exhibits. A private collection of these was sold by Lord McAlpine in the 1990’s (West Green House) but few have come to market since.
