An extraordinary collection of Edward Gorey materials, constituting approximately 20 linear feet of shelfspace, including hundreds of editions written and illustrated by the artist, works by others bearing his illustrations, in addition to tertiary works for which he supplied cover art, a large volume of periodicals featuring his cartoons and illustrations, and a diverse quantity of ephemera produced from or inspired by Gorey's designs. The collection was assembled over decades by the well known collector David Belch of the San Francisco Public Library, and a portion of them served as part of a major Gorey exhibition at the library in 1975. The assembled archive serves as a testament to Mr. Belch's disciplined search for as many samples of the diverse and often ephemeral creations of this singular and prolific 20th century artist.
