An extremely fine late 19th-Century brass and ferrous metal model of the twin cylinder horizontal reversing pit winding engine 'Dorothea', built by J. Soulsby 1882 with wood lagged cylinders 1¼in bore x 2½in stroke, centrally mounted inward facing valve chests, the cover plates engraved J. Soulsby 1882 Philadelphia , pedestal mounted crosshead guides with fletched top rails, valve spindle guides, studded stuffing boxes, Stephenson's link reverse, barrelled connecting rods with marine-type big ends and disc cranks with centrally mounted rope drum. Further, details include driver's station with reversing lever, floor mounted stop valve and foot operated drum brake with linkage and wooden framing. The engines are mounted on individual brass beds on a mahogany base with handrails and bun feet -- 25.4 x 59cm. (10 x 23¼in.) Fitted carrying box with brass label stamped J. Soulsby Penshaw Station
