AN EXTREMELY RARE AND EXQUISITELY CARVED 'EIGHT STALLIONS' RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP
AN EXTREMELY RARE AND EXQUISITELY CARVED 'EIGHT STALLIONS' RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) The large gently flaring cup deeply carved in high relief to the exterior with eight horses, variously grazing, at rest and play in a rocky landscape setting, one attendant tends to the horses, while another stands in the foreground on the banks of a meandering river, the landscape detailed with wutong and maple trees, the handle formed by the gnarled trunk of a large maple tree which extends over the rim in to the interior, with an inscription to one side Muwang bajuntu , 'Eight Horses of Mu Wang' and signed Hanqing , the material of an attractive golden honey tone darkening to walnut at the core 5 in. (12.7 cm.) high, wood stand, box Weight: 13.8 oz. (392 gm.)
