AN IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE UNDERGLAZE-BLUE 'DRAGON' JAR, GUAN YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368) Well potted with a tapered body and high rounded shoulder rising to a straight neck and lipped rim, exquisitely painted in brilliant cobalt of deep sapphire-blue tone with a central band framing two striding three-clawed dragons, one with its head turned and mouth agape looking back towards its companion following behind, both in pursuit of 'flaming pearls' and amidst a cluster of clouds, above a lotus lappet border around the base, and below a diaper band and a six-pointed cloud-collar at the shoulder, each ruyi -shaped lappet enclosing a variety of flowering sprigs, including chrysanthemum and peony, with a further border of waves below a classic border on the short upright neck, the unglazed base countersunk within the broad foot and burnt orange from the firing (rim chip and associated hairline restored) 11 1/2 in. (29 cm.) high
