AN IMPORTANT HISTORIC GREYHOUND RACING CUP inscribed `THE GLAMORGAN GOLD CUP 1932 PRESENTED BY GREYHOUND RACING COMPANY, ARMS PARK` to the owners of `Beef Cutlet. The trophy is of traditional form but with lion-head handles and cast in 9ct gold, hallmarked for Birmingham 1932, 459gms complete with circular wooden stand, maker`s mark partially worn but firmly believed to be Asprey Ltd¦Provenance & Background: The trophy was won by Beef Cutlet, one of the most famous greyhounds of all time and a hugely influential dog in terms of lineage and the history of the sport. He was whelped in 1930, soon after greyhound racing was established and was one of the fastest greyhounds ever to run on the track or coursing field, Going on to pass outstanding qualities to his breeding line and form a new generation of sporting greyhounds. After reaching the last four of the National Breeders` Stakes at Powerstown in 1932, he was purchased from breeder J.A. Byrne by Sir Herbert Merrett the then chairman of Cardiff City Football Club as a present for his daughter, Joan Merritt. The trophy represents Beef Cutlet`s first race which was held at Arms Park, Cardiff, for the Glamorgan Gold Cup. He won the race in a new track record, covering the 500yds in an outstanding 28.41sec.¦Beef Cutlet`s victories caused a sensation in greyhound circles even though he raced for little more than 12 months, in May 1933, over a specially constructed course for the Hunt Cup at Blackpool, he won by eight lengths and covered 500yds in 26.13sec. This recorded time still stands as one of the fastest times ever for 500yds recording an average speed of over 40 mph. Beef Cutlet went on to win on numerous other tracks in his short career, which was curtailed by injury in 1934 after which he was retired to stud. Among the outstanding progeny he went on to sire were Laid`s Cutlet, Laughing Lieutenant, Epinard, Jesmond Cutlet, Loose Lead, Juvenile Classic and Junior Classic. Beef Cutlet was from a litter that also included Queen of the Suir, one of the greatest bitches in the history of the sport. ¦Provenance: By family descent (further details available for prospective purchasers making serious enquiries about acquiring the cup). The cup is accompanied by a photograph of `Beef Cutlet` and `Pa`. A photograph of greyhound Clover Hill Fairy, a newspaper cutting from News of the World and an Irish Coursing Club Certificate of Registration for Minute Steak and a 1935 programme for a meeting at Welsh White City
