( Hallmarks for London, 1820-21 ), 73 mm. x 48 mm., the cover decorated with a two colour gold border of roses and thistles, the inside inscribed 'Presented to Lieutenant Matthew Liddon, Commander of H.M.S. Griper, IN THE EXPEDITION UNDER CAPTAIN PARRY, to discover A North West Passage A.D. 1819. BY HIS FRIENDS RESIDENT CHIEFLY IN THE TOWN and Neighbourhood of his Native Place Axminster Devon IN TESTIMONY OF THEIR ESTEEM for his Private Worth, and high admiration of his Gallantry and Public Services.' (Maker's Mark J.S., possibly for J. Stroud, London goldsmith, fl. 1819-1823) (b) Portrait miniature on ivory of Liddon half-length, in Naval uniform, 70 mm. x 85 mm., attributed to Opie, in heavy gilt frame, written on the reverse 'Matthew Liddon, 1st. February 1819, London' (c) A pair of gold 'bullion' Naval Epaulets, c. 1820, in contemporary box, together with five other items of accoutrement including sword knot and gold cloth sword belt (d) Copper visiting card plate by Hughes and Mimber of London engraved 'Captain Liddon Royal Navy' in paper wrapper of Miller, Stationers, 52 Park St., Bristol (e) An early 19th century gold ring, set with chrysolite, rubies and diamonds, with an old ivory ticket indistinctly inscribed 'Engagement ring Matthew Liddon', and a recent ticket stating 'Engagement ring of Matthew Liddon (R.N. who went at Capt. of the Hecla (sic.), with Sir.
