BY PIETRO PIFFETTI TURIN, CIRCA 1740
AN IMPORTANT ROYAL PIEDMONTESE ENGRAVED IVORY, MOTHER-OF-PEARL, TORTOISESHELL INLAID AND JAPANNED BOX BY PIETRO PIFFETTI TURIN, CIRCA 1740 Of shaped rectangular form, the hinged top centred by a circular medallion of a profile looking left, within multiple scale and moulded borders, flanked by berried foliate garlands and within a trailing scrolling foliate surround, the front, sides and back conformingly inlaid with red ink engraved blossoming flowerheads issuing from foliate scrolls above an ivory banding, the red japanned interior painted with a gilt and silvered chinoiserie fan to the lid, and with removable shaped tray set with two further polylobed smaller black japanned and gilt-decorated trays, the underside of the box with conformingly painted fan, minor losses to tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl inlay 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; 8¼ in. (21 cm.) wide; 5½ in. (14 cm.) deep
