AN IMPRESSIVE EARLY ILLUMINATED KUFIC QUR'AN FOLIO PROBABLY DAMASCUS, MID 8TH CENTURY 3lQur'an II, sura al-baqara , parts vv. 5-8, Arabic manuscript on vellum, 8ll. of elegant elongated sepia kufic script, later added diagonal dashes marking letter pointing, red and green dots marking vocalisation, kufic within elaborate knotted strapwork borders filled with geometric and vegetal motifs in green, brown, yellow and blue, two of the edges with palmettes extending into the borders, verso similarly decorated, losses to edges and to kufic Folio 10 5/8 x 14in. (27 x 35.6cm.) at largest; with repair 12¼ x 15 3/8in. (31 x 39.1cm.)
