Vol. 1 with portrait frontispiece. (8vo) 21.5x12.5 cm (8½x5") period half calf and marbled boards, marbled endpapers, gilt decorated spines. Four volume edition of Adam Smith's ground-breaking analysis of capitalist economics, in which it was demonstrated that the impetus of individual greed would create wealth for the many. (Printing & the Mind of Man 221 for First Edition). Lot Amendments Condition: Fair amount of wear and rubbing to bindings, edges and corners worn with some light bumps, vol. I with much of spine leather lacking and both boards detached, vol. 4 with front board detached, other volumes with tender joints and hinges cracked or starting, spine title and number labels lacking on all volumes, with the exception of the Number label on vol. 1; interiors solid with light scattered foxing.
