An interesting Canton fan, the recto painted with a group of people outside the city gate, some carrying banners with Chinese characters including Huangfu Yinqing (the Huang family welcoming the new bride) and Hanlin Yuan (Hanlin Academy, the highest academic institution in old China), people waiting inside the gate, their clothes of fabric, their faces of ivory, the verso with people following different activities such as roasting pigs and carrying water, others holding cushions and fans, possibly in preparation for the wedding celebration, several signs with Chinese characters, the sticks of carved and pierced ivory, the guardsticks deeply carved with figures, flowers and a pagoda - 11in. (28cm), mid 19th century, in fitted lacquer box
