Title: An Introduction to Electricity and Galvanism with Cases, shewing their Effects in the Cure of Diseases. To Which is Added, a Description of Mr. Cuthbertson's Plate Electrical Machine Author: Carpue, Joseph Constantine Place: London Publisher: A. Phillips Date: 1803 Description: viii, 112 pp. Three engraved folding plates at the rear. (8vo) 21x13 cm (8¼x5¼") period half calf and marbled boards, morocco spine label lettered in gilt. First Edition. English physician Joseph Carpue was a pioneer in the experimental use of electricity in medicine and the present, according to Garrison-Morton is "one of the first works in the English language devoted entirely to medical electricity." Heirs of Hippocrates offers: "Carpue was among the early users of electrotherapy and this book is fascinating reading as it reveals the hopes that all physicians have for the promise of new therapeutic modalities. Carpue was not easily deterred and he describes successful healings as well as case after case where the use of electrotherapy had no healing effect on the patient whatsoever. He used Galvanism to treat arthritis, fractures, venereal disease, amenorrhea, cataract, deafness, blindness, tumors, and many other diseases. Carpue also includes a discussion of the theory of electricity, many experiments with galvanism, and descriptions of various types of apparatus for producing electricity." The author is perhaps most distinguished however for being the first to perform a rhinoplasty in England. Garrison-Morton 1989; Heirs of Hippocrates 1204; Wellcome II, p. 304. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding lightly worn; faint old tidemarks to outer margins of plates; some foxing within; very good. Item number: 290041
