Beschreibung:

An Italian relief sculpted marble portrayal of the Crucifixion with Saint John and the Virgin, probably Veronese, late 13th / early 14th century, fragmentary, a section of a spoked wheel (or possibly a nimbus) relief carved to the upper left edge 65cm high, 43cm wide, 9cm deep CATALOGUE NOTES: The static composition, the long form of Christ's perizonium and the large nimbus point to a date for this powerful scene of the Crucifixion at the beginning of the 14th century; and Verona is a likely candidate for the place of production, although other Italian cities are possibilities. Comparison can be drawn with an example that was sold at Sotheby's Milan, Salvatore e Francesco Romano. Antiquari a Firenze. A Century as Antique Dealers at Palazzo Magnani Feroni, 12th - 15th October 2009, lot 31. Strong similarities include Saint John's gaze out to the worshipper which is not always the style of depiction in other Italian versions but would appear to be more of a norm in Veronese reliefs -it is seen in the Crucifixion relief on the facade of the Basilica of San Zeno in that city The Church of Saint Anastasia, also in Verona carries a 14th century relief of the Crucifixion above the main portal as well, and this is also directly comparable. In this it is the postures and the positioning of the hands in both the Virgin and St John which is most notably similar Also compare a sculpted tufa Crucifixion group in the Castelvecchio Museum, Verona, the Crucifix and the Weepers, by the so-called Master of Sant'Anastasia, from the church of San Giacomo in Tomba
