(Asian Art | Live Online, 18th November 2020) AN OIL PAINTING OF A CHINESE LADY. AN OIL PAINTING OF A CHINESE LADY. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. Depicting a painting of a Chinese lady, the reverse inscribed, "...aw, nurse of Rose De Chine... (Mrs Roswell Randall Hoes) .. her father Samuel L Gouvarreur, jr.. as U.S. Consul in Foo Chow, China. Painted in Foo Chow for Mr Gouvarreur. The nurse called her "Jungchoon" meaning Rose.", framed, 28 x 23cm. 清十九世紀 油畫仕女像 The lady referred to may be traced to be Rose de Chine Gouverneur Hoes (1860 – 1933), who as her name suggests, was born in China, and married Roswell Randall Hoes (1850 – 1921). She was the great grand-daughter of James Monroe (1758 – 1831), the fifth President of the United States of America. The name of her Chinese nurse is unfortunately illegible on the note to the reverse of the painting, however, her portrait demonstrates a level of personalisation rare in Chinese portraiture and helps to bring to life the Chinese side of Sino-American interactions in the 19th Century.
