An ormolu, paste-set and enamel-mounted quarter-chiming automaton table clock Case Chinese, probably Guangzhou, circa 1790; movement English, Robert Philp, London, Last quarter 18th century The case with a surmount in the form of an ormolu scent bottle cast with flowers and leafy scrolls and decorated with paste gems, with automaton revolving 'pineapple' finial, the front with six revolving whirligigs revolving around a larger catherine wheel, all mounted on a royal blue guilloché enamel disc with painted border, with paste gem Chinese characters above for the invocation Great Prosperity , on a dais raised on four foliate cast supports terminating in mythical birds' heads, the centre with automaton twisted glass rods simulating cascading water, falling to a platform cast with rocaille , the sides with shell-cast handles, the angles with flowerhead and scroll cast mounts and the front, sides and rear similarly applied with elaborate floral mounts, with green, red and white paste gem floral spandrels around the red and white lanceolate paste gem bezel, with acorn handle, the white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with gilt-metal hands and blued steel sweep centre seconds, the triple chain fusee movement with verge escapement with ten bells for the quarter chime and further bell for hour strike, indirect drive from the chiming train to the automaton features above, the backplate engraved with foliage and a central basket of flowers above a cartouche signed Rob.t Philp London 34¼in. (87cm.) high
