An ovoid vase with widely flaring short neck painted and gilt with a panel depicting a legendary scene with a warrior king holding a bow standing before a female figure holding a ho-o, both with a child attendant, in a river landscape of trees and buildings, the reverse with flowers issuing from rockwork below wisteria in a fenced garden, the side panels with figures at leisure before Mount Fuji on a ground of chrysanthemum heads, the shoulder with a narrow band of butterflies below a lappet collar, the foot with a further band of scrolling foliage -- 10in. high, signed Kyoto Matsumoto Hozan.
