An unusual carved red lacquer bowl, Ming dynasty, with gently flaring rim and a broad foot, the sides carved with a frieze of animals including deer, qilin, Buddhist lions and fish, all against a wave diaper above rocks and waves and a keyfret sequence, the interior lined with beaten silvered copper, the base lacquered black, 12cm diameter 明 朱漆鱼鹿麒麟碗 Comparable examples with the present bowls feature decorative designs in form of birds amid floral shrubs, such as those illustrated in pl. 254 and 255 of Carved Lacquer of the Palace Museum, and in pl. 70 of Garner, Chinese Lacquer, in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
