AN UNUSUAL CARVED RED LACQUER OCTAGONAL BOX AND COVER MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY The top of the faceted domed cover carved with a scene of Shoulao seated beside a deer while three immortals, one holding a peach, stand before him, each of the eight facets on the sides depicting one of the Eight Immortals standing in a landscape, each facet of the box carved with a different flower including lotus, herbaceous peony, tree peony, rose, peach, camellia, magnolia and chrysanthemum, the panels of the rim borders also carved with different flowers as are those on the flared foot, the interior and base lacquered black 9¼ in. (23.5 cm.) high
