AN UNUSUAL CASED SET OF FOUR FLINTLOCK PISTOLS COMPRISING A PAIR OF 24-BORE FLINTLOCK DUELLING PISTOLS BY JOHN TWIGG, LONDON, CIRCA 1780, AND A CONTEMPORARY PAIR OF 120-BORE LIEGE BOX-LOCK POCKET PISTOLS The former with signed lightly swamped twist octagonal sighted barrels, engraved case-hardened tangs, signed case-hardened bevelled locks (one side-nail a working replacement), figured walnut full stocks carved with a shell in relief behind each barrel tang, flat-sided butts cut with pineapple chequering, engraved reblued iron mounts including trigger-guards each with pineapple finial, and original horn-tipped ramrods, the latter with turn-off rifled cannon barrels, engraved actions inscribed 'London', swelling flat-sided walnut butts inlaid with silver wire scrolls, and engraved blued trigger-guard safety-catches: in lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including three-way flask covered in mottled leather, the lid with carrying handle of Chippendale form, the duelling pistols with London proof marks, barrelsmith's mark IT 15in. and 6¼in.
