AN UNUSUAL RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP 17th/18th Century The thick-walled vessel of rounded triangular form with rounded everted upper section carved with deep vertical flutes and terminating in a rolled rim, carved on the exterior in raised relief on the straight sides of the lower section with two inscriptions, each of four characters in seal script reading zhi du qing xin ("to cure and purify the heart") and yi shu jie xie ("to relieve heat and banish evil"), the slightly concave base with an oval seal, probably a maker's mark, reading Yun Fu , the horn of reddish-honey color; together with another rhinoceros horn libation vessel, 18th century, carved in relief around the sides with various trees and leafy branches issuing from rocky cliffs and a large gnarled pine tree at one end which forms the handle, the horn of dark reddish-brown color 4.1/8 (10.5cm.) across; 4 (12cm.) high (2)
