AN UNUSUAL SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF ACOUYE GUANYIN
DALI KINGDOM, YUNNAN PROVINCE, 12TH CENTURY
AN UNUSUAL SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF ACOUYE GUANYIN DALI KINGDOM, YUNNAN PROVINCE, 12TH CENTURY The tall, slender figure is shown standing with right hand raised in vitarkamudra , the left hand in varadamudra , and wearing pendent earrings, a foliate necklace, armbands and a bejeweled belt encircling a rosette-secured sash tied around the hips of the close-fitting dhoti which falls in U-shaped folds to the sandaled feet. The hair is drawn up behind a tiara into a tall topknot with elaborately looped, narrow braids which center an image of Amitabha Buddha seated in dhyanasana and fall onto the shoulders. There are two rectangular openings in the back of the body, one retaining its cover, and a tab projects from the bottom of each foot. The patina is of reddish-brown color. 12¾ in.
