AN UNUSUAL SMALL BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, HU SHANG DYNASTY, 13TH CENTURY BC Of pear shape and circular section, the neck encircled by a slightly raised band flat cast with two taotie masks on a leiwen ground, divided by narrow flanges and separated by a pair of small lug handles, raised on a pedestal foot encircled by a band of spiralled scrolls repeated in a narrower band at the rim of the conical cover below the conical finial cast with whorl motifs, with mottled pale green encrustation, the decoration with traces of black inlay 6 7/8 in. (17.5 cm.) high
