ANDERSON, Robert (fl. 1668-1696). The Making of Rockets. In Two Parts. The First Containing the Making of Rockets for the meanest Capacity. The other To make Rockets by a Duplicate Proposition, to 1000 pound Weight or higher . London: for Robert Morden 1696. 8 o (154 x 98 mm). Woodcut diagrams in text. (First gathering sprung.) Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked with original backstrip preserved); cloth folding case. Provenance : E.N. de C. Andrade (bookplate). VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. Anderson was a silk-weaver and mathematician who wrote numerous works on gunnery and firearms. The Making of Rockets is concerned with the problem of finding the proper mathematical proportion by which to increase or decrease the strength of gun metal, or as Anderson states in the dedicatory epistle of this work: "to increase or decrease the strength of Materials according to the Effects and Services required." He then applies these same principles to rocketry. "The work also gives the basic rules of rocket construction and recipes for various pyrotechnical effects, such as varicolored stars and rockets that 'swim upon water' (Norman)." Wing A-3105; Norman 54.
