Andreini (Francesco) La Seconda parte delle Bravure del Capitano Spavento…divisa in quaranta ragionamenti, FIRST and ONLY EDITION, woodcut ornaments, small tear to G2, staining to second half of the work, contemporary vellum over boards, soiled, 1618; with La Bravure del Capitano Spavento divise in molti ragionamenti in forma di dialogo, third edition, woodcut tailpieces, including small vignettes, engraved author’s portrait by Abraham Tummermann, title torn, lacking F1-8, G2-7, H2-8, some browning, dust soiling and staining throughout, pages mostly loose, 18th century ownership notes on pastedown, bookplate, contemporary limp vellum, ink title to spine, joints cracked, heavily soiled and stained, a little wormed, the upper cover lacking lower corner, 1624, woodcut printer’s device on titles, 4to, Vincenzo Somasco, Venice (2) *** Scarce the second part, unrecorded at auction. The first part was published in 1607 and 1609. A complete edition was reprinted in 1624. Andreini was the husband of the famous actress Isabella Canali and the renown leader of the 'Compagnia dei Comici Gelosi'. He achieved his fame with his interpretation of the Capitano (see Rasi I, 53-87). The work contains the dialogues between the Capitano and his servant Trappola, and is considered an important source for the history of the Commedia dell’Arte.
