"The plates have considerable charm because of the arrangements of the diagrams on the plates and the introduction of characteristic slim figures : all in crisp, clean lines" (Fowler). Nancy: Jean Janson, 1584. 2 o . 40 etched plates perhaps by the author, on 39 leaves (the first two on one plate). (Light, mostly marginal staining, tiny holes in center of plate 5.) Provenance : Christophorus Bautru (early inscription on title); some early marginalia. FIRST EDITION of Errard's collection of plates depicting his mechanical inventions. One of the most beautiful and rarest of the "Machine Books" of the 16th-century. According to American Book Prices Current, no copy of this work has sold in at least the last 35 years.
