ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL, 19th CENTURY A VIEW OF CANTON WATERFRONT WITH THE FACTORIES BEYOND Oil on canvas, original Chinese frame 44.5 x 77cm. Provenance: In a Dorset family collection since being acquired by Lt. Col. Cecil Troyte-Bullock (b.1869) of the British Army in China during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901). This view can be dated to circa 1847-1856 from the building of the church and the two large buildings on the left which occupy the site of the old factories (the church was not built until 1847 and was destroyed with the factories in a fire on December 14th 1856). The flags of Britain, America, France and Denmark are flying from the office buildings to the right. See Carl L. Crossman, The China Trade, (Woodbridge 1991). A very similar view was sold at Phillips London, June 19th 2001, (£15,000). An attribution to Sunqua (Fl.1840-1870) is possible. £6000-10000
