Lot of 4 volumes. Fourth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. 1882-83 by J.W. Powell. Washington: GPO, 1886. LXIII, 532pp. This volume includes reports on mound explorations by Cyrus Thomas, Cushing's Zuni work. Papers include North American petroglyphs with a section on Peruvian quipus, ancient Pueblo pottery and ancient pottery of the Mississippi Valley. Fifth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. 1883-84 by J.W. Powell. Washington: GPO, 1887. LIII, 564pp, two folding maps in rear pocket, "Map of the Former Territorial Limits of the Cherokee 'Nation of' Indians" Exhibiting the boundaries of the Various Cessions of land Made by Them..." and "Map Showing the TErritory Originally Assigned ot the Cherokee 'Nation of' Indians West of the Mississippi. Also the Boundaries of the Territory Now Occupied or Owned by Them." Reports include continuations of Cyrus Thomas' mound explorations and Cushing's Zuni work, plus linguistic field work. Papers include burial mounds of the northern United States, the Cherokee and Seminole Indians, the Navajo Mountain Chant, and religious life of the Zuni child. Sixteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. 1894-95 by J.W. Powell. Washington: GPO, 1897. CXIX, 326pp. This edition gives the activities of the BAE monthly and summaries by discipline (archaeology, linguistics, mythology, etc.). Papers include Peruvian trephination, day symbols of the Maya calendar, cliff ruins of Canyon de Chelly, and Tusayan snake ceremonies. Eighteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. 1896-97 by J.W. Powell. Washington: GPO, 1899. Part 1 of two parts, LVII, 518pp plus numerous photographs and other illustrations. This part includes papers on the Eskimos around the Bering Strait. Condition: Wear including shelf wear especially to earliest two. One spine beginning to separate at rear hinge.
