CONTEMPORARY ROMAN RED MOROCCO GILT BOUND FOR POPE CLEMENT XI, covers with his arms within an octagonal panel, surrounded by an intricate overall post-fanfare design, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with a repeat pattern in gilt, gilt patterned pastedowns, g.e. (neat repairs to head of spine and corners), modern cloth box. Provenance : POPE CLEMENT XI (Gianfrancesco Albani, 1649-1721, Pope 1700, binding); Thomas Westwood (armorial bookplate); Pauli Menso (booklabel). A VERY FINE BINDING BY THE SUCCESSOR TO THE ANDREOLI BROTHERS, BOUND FOR THE DEDICATEE. The binder employed many of the Andreolis' tools, and the design is a progression from their style. Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli died in 1696 and 1699, respectively, but their tools and workshop were clearly continued by this worthy successor. The Albani library was founded in the seventeenth century, much enlarged by Clement XI, and dispersed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
