After a two-year expedition to Brazil, Urguguay and Argentina in 1856-58, Goering was commissioned by the British Museum to pursue his ornithelogical studies in South America and travelled to Venezuela in 1866. He travelled extensively in Venezuela collecting information for his two other subjects of chief interest, botany and geography. His contributions to these fields were noteworthy, in particular for his study of the Caripe region.
