Title printed in red and black, 48 woodcut illustrations printed from 59 blocks, ALL RICHLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Several inner margins strengthened at the time of binding, very small hole in D2 affecting two letters and a cut, a few minor stains.) 17 t h -century Italian boards. Cloth folding box. Privately published FIRST EDITION of the description and illustration of Apian's invention of several instruments, including the quadrant and the nocturnal, designed to solve astronomical and geodetic problems by mechanical means. It follows by two years his pioneering Astronomicon Caesareum , also produced at his own press. The latter is invariably found colored and was no doubt issued in that state. The coloring of the Vershbow copy of Quadrans astronomicus is practically identical and was therefore probably done at the author's shop. COLORED COPIES ARE OF THE GREATEST RARITY.
