APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume (1880-1918) & André DERAIN (1880-1954) illustrator. L'Enchanteur pourrissant. Paris: Henry Kahnweiler, [1909]. 4 o (266 x 197 mm). Half title, title printed in red and black, woodcut vignette on title, 32 woodcut illustrations (12 full page) after Derain. Original limp vellum wrappers. FIRST EDITION of Apollonaire's first book, number 73 of 75 copies SIGNED BY APOLLINAIRE AND DERAIN. This is also the first book with illustrations by André Derain and the first book published by Henry Kahnweiler. "A triple monument in the history of the 20th century book. The bold and sharply cut wood blocks, characteristic of the vehemence and exaggeration of the Fauves and recalling Derain's interest in Negro sculpture, heralded the modern revival of the woodcut. A scarce item today L'Enchanteur pourrissant sold very poorly when published" ( The Artist and the Book 78); Ray Art of the French Illustrated Book 388.
