APOLLO 14 FLIGHT CHARTS – Three charts, two Earth and one lunar, [1970]. Apollo 14 charts, all SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Edgar MITCHELL. This group provides a better understanding of the path Apollo 14 traveled, from ground to Earth and lunar orbits, and to the final landing site, as well as the alternative mission plan were the flight to have failed to leave Earth orbit. The lunar chart is INSCRIBED: "We were right on the landing site," quoting part of Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard's first words from the moon after landing. He has marked the exact landing point with an “X.” Further details on the contents of this lot: 1) Apollo Earth Orbit Chart (AEO), Apollo Mission 14 . For January 31, 1971 Launch Date. Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, USAF for NASA, November 6, 1970. Color Earth map, 13 by 42 inches. The ground track for the Apollo 14 launch vehicle starts from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with two Earth orbits plotted up to the TransLunar Injection (TLI) burn over the Pacific Ocean just off the U.S. west coast. The first 24 hours after the TLI burn is plotted in one hour intervals with a bright red line moving westward over the Pacific Ocean and ending over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. SIGNED and INSCRIBED: “Edgar MITCHELL, Apollo 14 LMP” in the Pacific Ocean area. 2) Apollo Flight Chart (AFC), Apollo Mission 14. Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, USAF for NASA, First Edition, November 16, 1970. Color Earth map, 10 by 33 inches. Identical to the chart carried on the mission having part number SKB 32100058-201 printed in the Indian Ocean area. If the Apollo 14 flight failed to travel to the moon once in Earth orbit, an alternate mission would have been carried out. The photographic targets listed and drawn on this chart would have been taken by the crew. SIGNED and INSCRIBED: “Edgar MITCHELL, Apollo 14 LMP” in the southern Atlantic Ocean area. 3) Apollo 14 Landing Site - Fra Mauro . U.S. Army Topographic Command and NASA/MSC Mapping Sciences Laboratory. Shaded relief map, 17 by 22 inches. Scale of 1:8,000, with a dual distance bar at the lower center. An extremely detailed landing approach chart with the landing site centered with in a large ellipse. An approach path is plotted from 6,000 feet out to the exact landing target then goes to 4,000 feet down-range. A cross-range distance 5,000 to the left and right of the target is also plotted. The major exploration objective, Cone Crater, is clearly labeled. SIGNED and INSCRIBED: "We were 'right on the landing site. Edgar MITCHELL, Apollo 14 LMP," quoting part of Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard's first words from the moon after landing. He has marked the exact landing point with an “X.”
