Final Report of Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Drill Mission Performance, July 31, 1972. 5. 14 4x5-inch photographs of the lunar surface drill being used during one of the late Apollo lunar EVAs. The Apollo Lunar Surface Drill (ALSD) was a used on Apollo Missions 15, 16 and 17. It included a cordless, battery-operated motor with special drill bits and core stems and was used to extract soil column samples. Astronauts could join the modular pieces and drill as deep as 10 feet into the soil. The present group comes from the estate of a Martin Marietta engineer who was instrumental in its design.
