An extensive archive of photographs, flight books, ephemera items related to the Apollo-Suyez Mission belonging to astronaut Deke Slayton.
The Apollo-Soyuz Mission was a joint mission between the United States and the U.S.S.R. that took place between 15 July and 24 July, 1975. The goal of the mission was to attach Apollo, a three man U.S. spacecraft which consisted of a Service Module, a Command Module and a Docking Module to the two man Soviet spacecraft, Soyuz. Launched from respective locations in Florida and Kazakhstan, the two spacecrafts met in space on July 17 and after 44 hours together parted ways. The present archive belonged to astronaut Deke Slayton, one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts. A heart condition grounded Slayton for the early Apollo missions, but medical clearance was later granted and at 51he became the oldest person to enter space. This impressive archive, containing dozens of items from the final apollo mission including flight books, photographs, meal plans and a later diary, gives an inside view to painstaking preparation for space exploration, the day-to-day experience of living in space, and the glory that comes with the return to earth. Typed letters in Russian Invitations and ephemera from trips to Russia Ephemera including Apollo-Soyuz and NASA stamps, an original photograph of the launch, invitations and fan mail newspaper, an unused mission sticker, press photographs, a Soviet Cosmonaut badge, large photographs from the presidential reception depicting richard nixon . Photographs taken during a 1970 Naval expedition of the antarctic. A large amount of publicity photos and related documents concerning the spacemen's tour of North Africa the Near East in 1976. Includes numerous photographs of Slayton and the other spacemen with Anwar Sadat of Egypt, King Khalid of Saudi Arabia, and President Katzir of Israel. Information sheets, letters and itineraries used on the tour, and a 21 page manuscript diary kept by slayton on the tour of the middle east. Slayton writes, "Prez. Sadat very intelligent, pleasant, straight forward friendly towards U.S. … my opinion Sadat's days are numbered." The archive concludes with a letter dated 14 June 1993 on NASA stationery to Slayton's wife upon his death in which is written about Slayton "His unique ability to bring concepts to life marked him as unique among his peers and a pathfinder for our dreams."
