APOLLO SPACECRAFT – ERTEL, Ivan D., et al. The Apollo Spacecraft: A Chronology (NASA SP-4009) . Washington: NASA, 1969-1978. SIGNED by a member of every Apollo crew, a rare complete set of this history of the vehicles that resulted in the 1969 Moon landing. Volume variously INSCRIBED and/or SIGNED by Buzz ALDRIN, James LOVELL Gene CERNAN, Walt CUNNINGHAM, Charles M. DUKE, JR, Fred HAISE, Richard GORDON Edgar MITCHELL, Dave SCOTT, Tom STAFFORD, and Al WORDEN. Volume I begins with historical references on manned lunar flight, including Hermann Oberth’s idea of earth orbit rendezvous to refuel a space ship before the trip to the Moon. Additional concepts conceived throughout the 1940s and 50s are cited. Throughout the chronology are topics of the continuing work between government and industry, their contractual relations, hardware development, and changing mission architectures. Flight vehicle development and fabrication, their computer and navigational requirements, and the test flights of the Apollo spacecraft are described. Events concerning spacecraft development are recounted almost day-by-day starting in 1960 and ends with the last entries dated July 1974 in Volume IV, covering all major turning points such as the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire in January 1967 which called for numerous corrections, changes, and re-evaluation of flight planning and procedures. Four volumes. 10.5 by 8 inches each. 269, 277, 269 and 463 pp respectively. All original red cloth.
