APULEIUS Madaurensis, Lucius (b. c.123). Opera . Edited by Johannes Andreae de Buxiis, bishop of Aleria (1417-1475). - HERMES Trismegistus. Asclepius . Translated by Apuleius. - ALBINUS (fl. 2nd century). Epitome disciplinarium Platonis . Translated by Petrus Balbus (d.1479). Vicenza: Henricus de Santo Ursio, Zenus (Rigo di ca Zeno), 9 August 1488. Median 2° (327 x 211mm). Collation: A 6 a-m 8 . 6 n 8 o-x 8 . 6 y-z 6 & 6 \\n 6 (A1 blank, A2r editor's letter, A6v table, a1r Apuleius, u8v Hermes Trismegistus, y6r Albinus (attributed to Alcinous), \\n4v colophon and printer's mark, \\n5r register, \\n5v-6 blank). 176 (of 178, without first and final blank) leaves. 38 lines and headline. Type: 9:112R, some Greek. 3- to 8-line initial spaces with guide-letter. Printer's device at end. (Small wormholes affecting some letters, small stains on a1, occasional light spotting.) 18th-century English red morocco, tooled in gold with roll-border and central lozenge built up from small tools, gilt spine (slight darkening and scuffing, some wear and repairs at spine and corners). Provenance : contemporary annotations in a humanist hand (washed); small ink stamp with initials 'N.B.' on title; Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith (1852-28, pencilled ascription on flyleaf). Second edition of these works central to Renaissance Platonism. The works of Apuleius ('Apuleius the Platonist', as St. Augustine called him), are concerned with magic, transformation and antiquity. They are joined by the Asclepius of Hermes Trismegistus, since Apuleius was considered its translator. It was the only philosophical Hermetic work known in the West in the Middle Ages. The Epitome of Albinus (owing to a misreading also ascribed to 'Alcinous', as in this edition) is a handbook of platonic philosophy compiled for the general reader. Cardinal Bessarion, much praised here by Bussi in his dedicatory letter, listed these works in his defense of Platonism, Adversus Platonis calumniatorem . as necessary to a full comprehension of platonic philosophy (see lot 120). HC *1316; BMC VII, 1047 (IB. 31851); GW 2302; IGI 770; Polain(B) 285; Goff A-935.
