Petrified Wood Slab

Natural History

Estimate

Price realised:

Beschreibung:

Araucarioxylon arizonicum Triassic Chinle Formation, Northern Arizona Harvested on property just adjacent to the renowned Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, this is a fine example of the world’s most sought-after petrified wood. Specimens from this region are known for their breathtaking array of saturated colors, as this interestingly-shaped slab, with splashes of yellow, purple and sienna, exemplifies. Bands of charcoal and ochre, ebony and gray embellish what are already prominent tree rings. In other areas of the specimen, colors meld and swirl in a wondrous mosaic. The petrification process occurs when trees are quickly covered with silica-rich sediments that later seep into the trees and harden into quartz. Coloration results from the presence of trace elements and minerals in such sediments. The top surface of this slab, derived from a 225 million-year-old tree, has been worked to a high, permanent polish. Sized appropriately for an end table. Measures 36 x 28 1/2 x 1 1/2in
