Letters include: n.p., 4 May (year unreadable '4?) from Thos. Ashmead, invitation to shooting match; Busley Point; 25 Dec. 1842 from G(?) Busley, Jr., one of the more interesting letters, a request to trade tea for guns, if Krider can "dispose" of any more; Washington, 18 May 1846 from John Sciver(?), arrival in Washington for an exhibition; New York 30 June 1846 from P? Vallie, order for gun barrels; Washington, 30 May (no year) from J. Sciver(?), instructions for delivery of 2 guns to an "exhibition;" New York, 1 Feb 1848 from Thos. Ashmead, about the inability to send "Natural History specimens" to a mutual friend; "Astor House," 5 March 1848 from A. Hunnann(?) short note telling Krider to Be prepared to start at a days warning, but no other details; plus an empty envelope with French postage. John Krider is listed variously as a gunmaker-naturalist, or specimen collector, or sporting goods purveyor. Besides guns, he was also known for his bamboo fishing poles. This natural history "sideline" may be his connection to Mr. Ashmead and the request for "specimens." We are unable to find what kind of exhibition was happening in Washington, but the nation was gearing up for war with Mexico (already declared). One letter relates to sending 2 gun barrels to the exhibition, one 1/2" caliber, the other 5/8" caliber, so the various purveyors could have been seeking government contracts. Condition: Letters with normal folds and light toning, VG, photograph torn and bent, one escutcheon toned, other EXC.
