ARMSTRONG, Neil. Autograph endorsement signed (“Neil Armstrong”) at the conclusion of Erwin J. ADE. Typed letter signed ("Jerry") to Neil Armstrong, New York, 11 November 1976 – LINDBERGH, Anne Morrow (1906-2001) Autograph manuscript signed ("A.M.L."), n.p., n.d. – Typescript signed ("Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Family"), n.p., n.d. – Typed letter signed ("Anne M. Lindbergh") to Catherine Saxton, Darien, 19 February 1977 – Autograph note signed ("Ane M. Lindbergh") [to Catherine Saxton], Darien, 10 November 1976. Neil Armstrong asks not to be called an "Astronaut" for an event honoring the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. An archive concerning preparations for a dinner organized by the Explorer's Club both to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's transatlantic flight as well as to raise a five million dollar endowment to establish the Charles A. Lindbergh Memorial Fund (known today as the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation). The gala dinner, held at the Waldorf Astoria on 22 May 1977, was a star-studded affair with Walter Cronkite serving as master of ceremonies while the guests of honor included James Doolittle and Neil Armstrong. Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who had lost her husband Charles only two years before, was asked to give the introductory remarks for the occasion. Erwin J. Ade, a prominent New York philanthropist, helped organize the event, and in the course of that effort, reached out to Armstrong to enclose a draft of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's opening remarks for the event asking if he objects to her “use of the word 'Astronaut'”. Below Ade's signature, Armstrong writes: "I WOULD PREFER IT BE DELETED." In the right margin, Ade dashes off a note to Catherine Saxton, who was in charge of organizing the event and fund to "NOTIFY CA of change" The archive includes a handwritten draft and a near-to-final typed draft of Anne Morrow's introductory remarks (apparently written before 11 November 1976 as they still refer to Armstrong as an "Astronaut"). Also present is an earlier draft of the statement with additional notes on the selection process for beneficiaries of the fund and a note from Anne offering "apologies for these late suggestions," explaining that her children Land and Rand Lindbergh had also added amendments. Five pages, 8 1/2 x 11 in. [With:] Program: The Charles A. Lindbergh Memorial Fund "Spirit of St. Louis" dinner The Waldorf Astoria - May 20, 1977 ; two black and white photographs; one of Armstrong speaking (presumably at the aforementioned event) as well as an image of Armstrong, Doolittle with artist Eric Sloane holding the painter's work "Alone."
