Nouvellement imprime et corrige . Lyons: Claude Nourry, 1527. 4 o (250 x 165 mm). Woodcut title vignette portrait of Arnaldus de Villa Nova. Title printed in red and black. (Repaired wormtrack on C1-F8 with loss of letters, some browning.) Later vellum (soiled.) Provenance : contemporary marginalia; André Simon (bookplate); Christie-Miller family (bookplate). A Catalan by birth, Arnald of Villanova was a prominent member of the medical school at Montpellier. He became physician to Peter III of Aragon and later served in the same capacity under Alfosnso III and James II. He was one of the earliest European writers on alchemy and a pioneer in the classification of diseases. "Arnald himself went beyond commentary to try to develop a coherent, systematic science of medicine on the Galenic foundations" (DSB). This work went through several editions, all of which are SCARCE: for the last twenty five years, American Book Prices Current records only a copy of a later 1530 edition, sold in 1988. This edition not in Adams, Garrison-Morton, Osler, Waller. Brunet V:1232; Graesse VII:319; Wellcome I:480.
