ARNAULD, Antoine (1612-1694) and Pierre NICOLE (1625-1695). La logique ou l'art de penser . Paris: Charles Savreux, 1662. 12° (151 x 90mm). (Waterstained, imprint misregistered with several words supplied in contemporary manuscript.) Contemporary French calf, spine gilt in compartments (covers bowed, upper joints cracked, backstrip partly detached). Provenance : Fossard (repeated signature on front blank) -- Le Carpentier (inscription on title and front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. Arnauld prepared this work, often described as the Port-Royal Logique , for the young duc de Chevreuse, and it was held in such esteem that over the next 21 years he and his co-author, Nicole, produced five editions. The two authors, who also wrote on geometry, borrowed a number of their terms from mathematics and cast aside outmoded theories of syllogistic logic in favour of the more unconstrained reasoning methods already so brilliantly applied by Descartes. Brunet III, 1145; Cioranescu 17e 8112 & 51257.
