Arnold Newman (American, 1918-2006) Three Portraits of György Kepes c. 1965. Each signed "© Arnold Newman" in pencil below the print l.r., copyright and reproduction limitation stamp in ink on verso of mount. Gelatin silver prints, sizes to 6 1/8 x 9 5/8 in. (15.6 x 24.5 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Mounted, one print has minor emulsion losses at c.l. and l.r. and a small accretion at l.l. Provenance: From the private collection of György Kepes N.B. A renowned artist and educator, the Hungarian-born György Kepes studied in Budapest, Berlin, and London before coming to the United States in 1937 to work with Laszlo Molohy-Nagy at the New Bauhaus in Chicago. Throughout his career he explored the relationship between art, science, and technology, and experimented widely with film and photographic abstraction. In 1945 Kepes was invited to teach visual design in the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and went on to found its Center for Advanced Visual Studies.
