Arnold Newman is the legendary photographer and portraitist, heralded for his over six decade long career. Newman is best known for posing his subjects in their own environments to further illuminate the full substance of their individual characters. This portrait of Stravinsky poses the epochal 20th century composer in the far left corner to his piano. In Newman’s portrait, Stravinsky is an extension of the elegant instrument. The piano is dramatically silhouetted, complementing the composer’s great legacy and connection to his music. Literature Arnold Newman Selected Photographs . Cologne, 2000, ill. p. 104-105 Arnold Newman Five Decades . New York, 1986. pl. 61 Arnold Newman (1918-2006) Arnold Newman began to study art at the University of Miami in 1936, but he had to give up after two years for financial reasons. He then worked in Philadelphia in a studio for cheap and quick portrait photography and photographed his friends in his spare time. In the following years he developed his own style, which made him one of the most influential portrait photographers of the 20th century. In his carefully staged works he integrates the typical environment or typical tools of the sitter. His portrait of the composer Igor Stravinsky with his piano is world-famous.
