Beschreibung:

ART OF TENNIS Historische Darstellung aller Künste und Handwerke. Ein Weihnachtsgeschenk zur Belehruug und Unterhaltug für die Jugend . Leipzig: Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, 1807. Volume I [all published?], 4to. (22.6 x 19.1cm), hand-coloured engraved frontispiece view of Meissen, 13 hand-coloured plates by Geissler, each in two compartments (occasional stains, some light spotting and browning), contemporary German sheep-backed marbled boards (extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate) -- purchased for £10. 10s. from an unidentified bookseller. THE SCHWERDT COPY OF THIS RARE TITLE. An "attractive book on arts an crafts", it was aimed at the young. Schwerdt observes that "chapter vi contains a treatise on hunting, chapter xx deals with the manufacture of gunpowder, while chapter xxi includes bird-catching". The subject of chapter xxii is "Das Ballspiel", specifically real tennis ("Ballspiel in dem Ballhause") and "Ballon". The accompanying plate shows a game of doubles in a well-lit court with an unusually high net; apart from the gallery above the perpendicular windows, there is a surprising absence of the familiar architectural features. Schwerdt I, p. 244.
