Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate) -- purchased for £10. 10s. from an unidentified bookseller. THE SCHWERDT COPY OF THIS RARE TITLE. An "attractive book on arts an crafts", it was aimed at the young. Schwerdt observes that "chapter vi contains a treatise on hunting, chapter xx deals with the manufacture of gunpowder, while chapter xxi includes bird-catching". The subject of chapter xxii is "Das Ballspiel", specifically real tennis ("Ballspiel in dem Ballhause") and "Ballon". The accompanying plate shows a game of doubles in a well-lit court with an unusually high net; apart from the gallery above the perpendicular windows, there is a surprising absence of the familiar architectural features.
