Han växte upp utanför Melbourne i en konstnärsfamilj och har varit en av de som fört fram den australienska konsten under efterkrigstiden. Boyd producerade under sitt liv serier med arbeten som knyter an till bibliska, mytologiska och klassiska motiv, såsom auktionens målning som visar ett motiv av Narcissus. Själv har Boyd sammanfattat sin ambition med följande ord: "I'd like to think that, through my work, there is a possibility of making a contribution to a social progression or enlightenment. It would be nice if the creative effort or impulse was connected with a conscious contribution to society, a sort of duty or service. I think you have to be able to make something which does involve concepts and ideas."
