Saint-Gaudens informs La Farge that he saw his work in a church, and will "take the liberty of telling you what you probably feel as well as myself;" the gold frames on his works "burst the solemnity and unity in a singularly violent way to my eyes...the simplicity of the effect on me the first day was seriously affected when I was there the second time.
