ARTISTS, AMERICAN]. NAST, Thomas (1840-1902). Letter signed ("Th: Nast") to D. L. Grasmere, Morristown, N.J., 11 July 1882. 1¼ pp., 8vo, fine. Nast tells Grasmere that he has "something on hand which you may find suitable for the purpose you desire it for," and proposes to meet "in town, possibly at Harper's..." With unmounted albumen portrait. -- WHISTLER, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903). Autograph letter signed ("J Mc:Neill Whistler") to Helmick[?], Tite Street (Chelsea), London, n.d. 1 p., 8vo, stationery of the "Beefsteak Club...Strand." Fine. Whistler invites Helmick to his studio, as "I should like so much to show you some work I have been doing." -- WARD, John Quincy Adams (1830-1910), sculptor . Autograph letter signed ("J. A. Ward") TO JOHN LAFARGE, New York, 11 April 1902. 1 p., 8vo, "studio," stationery. Ward regrets that he does not have a model that would meet his fellow artist's requirements; his are all "very muscular, very young boys." -- SAINT-GAUDENS, Augustus (1848-1907). Autograph letter (unsigned) TO LAFARGE, n.p., n.d. 2 pp., 8vo. Verso with a HALF-PAGE CARICATURE of a man being beheaded, captioned "now you can behead me." Saint-Gaudens informs La Farge that he saw his work in a church, and will "take the liberty of telling you what you probably feel as well as myself;" the gold frames on his works "burst the solemnity and unity in a singularly violent way to my eyes...the simplicity of the effect on me the first day was seriously affected when I was there the second time. I couldn't imagine what it was until I hit on the frames." -- MORSE, Samuel F.B. (1791-1872). Autograph letter signed ("Saml.F.B. Morse") to J. Priestly, Treasurer, "Po'keepsie," 16 June 1858. 1 p., 8vo, tipped to larger sheet. The painter and inventor of the telegraph encloses a check for $12.00 and a bill [not present], and requests acknowledgment of receipt. -- LA FARGE, John (1835-10). Autograph letter signed ("John La Farge") to Harry Payne Whitney, "Sunny Side Place," Newport R.I., 31 July. 1½ pp., small 4to, with partially addressed envelope, both glued to a larger sheet. La Farge reminds Whitney that he had asked to borrow "one of the water-colours for a couple of months." Together 6 items. (6)
